چکیده

This paper considers a speci c problem of visual perception of motion, namely the problem of visual detection of independent 3D motion. Most of the existing techniques for solving this problem rely on restrictive assumptions about the environment, the observer's motion, or both. Moreover, they are based on the computation of a dense optical ow eld, which amounts to solving the illposed correspondence problem. In this work, independent motion detection is formulated as a problem of robust parameter estimation applied to the visual input acquired by a rigidly moving observer. The proposed method automatically selects a planar surface in the scene and the residual planar parallax normal ow eld with respect to the motion of this surface is computed at two successive time instants. The two resulting normal ow elds are then combined in a linear model. The parameters of this model are related to the parameters of self-motion (egomotion) and their robust estimation leads to a segmentation of the scene based on 3D motion. The method avoids a complete solution to the correspondence problem by selectively matching subsets of image points and by employing normal ow elds. Experimental results demonstrate the e ectiveness of the proposed method in detecting independent motion in scenes with large depth variations and unrestricted observer motion.

Independent 3D Motion Detection through Robust Regression in Depth Layers

This paper presents a methodology for the detection of objects that move independently of the observer in a 3D dynamic environment. Independent 3D motion detection is formulated as a problem of robust regression applied to visual input acquired by a binocular, rigidly moving observer. The qualitative analysis of images acquired by a parallel stereo configuration yields a segmentation of a scene...

Hierarchical Dem Refinement Using Surface Parallax

We present a multi-resolution approach to update and refine coarse 3D models of urban environments from a sequence of intensity images using surface parallax. A coarse and potentially incomplete depth map of the scene obtained from a Digital Elevation Map (DEM) is used as a reference surface which is refined and updated using this approach. We first estimate the camera motion using the referenc...

Recovery of Ego-Motion Using Region Alignment

A method for computing the 3D camera motion (the egomotion) in a static scene is described, where initially a detected 2D motion between two frames is used to align corresponding image regions. We prove that such a 2D registration removes all effects of camera rotation, even for those image regions that remain misaligned. The resulting residual parallax displacement field between the two region...

Motion parallax in cluttered scenes: frequency domain PCA

When an observer moves through a rigid 3D cluttered scene such as a forest, the set of image velocities in each local image region is constrained to lie near a line in velocity space. Estimating the directions of such lines in different regions is useful for computing the observer’s 3D motion, in particular, since each of these lines points towards the observer’s heading direction. Recently we ...

Qualitative detection of 3D motion discontinuities

This paper presents a method for the detection of objects that move independently of the observer in a 3D dynamic scene. Independent motion detection is achieved through processing of stereoscopic image sequences acquired by a binocular, rigidly moving observer. A weak assumption is made about the observer's motion (egomotion), namely that the direction of the translational and rotational compo...
